I see no one has answered you yet. I have no solution. But you could
try "Free Agent" a free version of the "Agent" newsreader. The free
version has spell checker disabled, but otherwise works fine with
text. I use Agent for text based newsgroups & a few picture based
newsgroups.

P.S. If you get to the point where you are serious about Usenet, and
are at high speed, & plan on downloading music & movies (multimedia
files), I highly recommend "News Rover". You won't know what I am
talking about, but this newsgroup reader handles .RAR & PAR2 files
internally, as well as having some great & easily accessed display
filters (for example - shows you only those message titles with .MP3
music files attached).

I've not seen this error. News works just like mail so it needs mailing
software working.

I can't think what would cause it other than a flawed installation of
OE. I recommend you simply un-install it then re-install OE. It's
unclear to me to what extent OE will actually un-install/re-stall as
it's considered part of the Operating System, but give it a shot anway.
At minimum it will reset key things, e.g. registry. Control Panel, Add
or Remove Programs, Tab: Windows Components.

If this doesn't work, suggest you reask this question in a newsgroup
more focused on OE (not Outlook, one for Outlook Express).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

OE will uninstall completely, the instructions for doing so are on the
MS website. Do a search for it, you'll find it.

OE has been gone from all of my Windows machines since Win95.
