Using win2k, I'm getting a scewball display on the stock defragmenter
program.

I copied a lot of files onto a new logical drive and when I
defragmented the drive, the green win2k system files for the drive
showed up in the second (back) half of the disk display. Usually
they're up front except for the dash in the middle. Disk management
and the disk check program seem to think the drive's fine.

Anyone know what's going on ?

It's about a 110gig logical drive on a WD 250G on a promise card.

Should I leave it alone, or flush it and try again ;)

When NTFS usage goes above 88% data goes into the MFT zone. For some reason
NTFS splits the MFT zone so the second part points to free space. This is not
usually an issue since the MFT is usually a few percent of the volume, well
below the 12% reserved.

NTFS gets more fragmented than FAT32 is such situations.

LOL.

It was my understanding that these system files are supposed to be at
the front of the disk. It's ALL in the middle to back side.

When I look at all my other logical drives, these files are at the
front, no matter how much stuff is on the drive.

Something's wrong.
