odd things with my machine

Hi everyone,
Hope this is the right place to ask this.
My win2000 mchine has started doing things really qiute strange, firstly
when I turn it on it gives me a list of what device i'd like to boot from.
When I selet my OS drive the machien boots normally bu when I get in to
it every time I try and select something from start menu I get a message
like 'the object c:\xxxxx\yyyyy\zzzz.lnk is not accessible or does not
exist'.
Similarly, if I try and browser the file manager (after loading a IE
window) nothing happens, and I have to type in paths directly.
I have update my NAV 2004 definitions and it found nothing, but I think
it's a virus as I can't see what else it can be, everything was fine
yesturday.

Perhaps this is something people are familiar with b4 and there is an
antivirus tool o tell me the problem and fix it....or perhaps it's not a
virus and somethings become corrupt in some way?

This is BIOS related, and cannot be influenced by malware, as the
operating system hasn't started yet, so there is no basis for any
malware to run upon.

I suspect a hardware failure, that is related to the hard disk entries
in the BIOS. That might be an alzheimer mainboard (forgets all settings,
normally this means, a new battery has to be inserted), or a hard disk
that is about to die.

Thx Gabriele,
Firstly Id like to apologise for being so dumb, I found the reaosn for
the bios boot device problem......there was something pushing down on my
escape key constantly :o/ I'm sorry for wasting your time...however, I still
have the problem with the shortcuts/files not opening, they are fine in safe
mode and I can execute applications from 'run'.

or a flakey power supply that cannot deliver enough voltage to spin up the
hard drives quick enough for them to be recognized by the boot loader...
