Odd Stop messages and boot errors

I've been running my win2k box for about 4 years more or less hassle
free, running windows update every friday, virus scans daily etc.
Yesterday I unplugged it, and moved it accross the room for about 8
hours while I put up a shelf. without power it seems that my ancient
CMOS battery couldn't cope, and when I booted it this morning it told
me it had lost all it's settings.
This wouldn't usually be a problem, so I set everything how I thought
it should be and booted. I got a Stop error, mentioning something
about ACPI so I rebooted, and got a different stop error, this went on
for about 30 boots, each time I changed something in CMOS and each
time I got a different Stop error.
As a last resort I switched a jumper on my motherboard to clear the
CMOS data and rebooted one last time. To my amazement this worked
perfectly. I did what I needed to do, switched it off and came back to
it later.
Booting it again I saw a familiar sight, 15 different blue screen stop
errors on 15 differnt boots. On a whim I switched the magic cmos
clearing jumper again, booted and found that it worked perfectly.
Doing some tests I found that the only way to make it boot was to
clear the cmos manually with the motherboard jumper, absolutely
nothing else worked.
Can anyone help as to why I have to move a jumper every time I want my
computer to boot?
If anyone thinks it will help I'll post the computer specs here,
though I can't for the life of me remember the name of the program
everyone uses to create neat reports.

replace the battery. It's a quarter-size shiny disk, probably a 2032.
Radio Shack sells them.
