Odd Sounds When Some (but not all) Web Pages Load

About 3 weeks ago an odd sound began occurring. When most (but not all) web
pages load, I get an odd sound that I would describe as either a whurring
sound followed by a soft and almost silent boom or a "zzzzzzzzz" sound
followed by the same soft and almost boom. I have my popup blocker set so
that it does not make a sound when a popup is blocked. I also went thru each
and every task/sound at Control/Sounds and did not hear the sound I am
hearing when a web page loads. I am running Windows XP SP2, Norton AV,
Webroot Spy Sweeper and Webroot Window washer. The sound does not seem to
impair performance but it is distracting and I am concerned that my browser
may have been corrupted.
 
What exactly are you hearing? Does it sound like an interference or an
actual sound produced by an application?

*IF* you're hearing interference, I've seen this happen with CRT's and some
LCD monitors as they age. Are your speakers adjacent to your monitor? When
you hear the noise, is there an abundance of a specific color on your screen
or are you scrolling? It sounds odd but I'd try updating the sound driver
just to cover the easy stuff and then make sure your cables are secure and
possibly reseat them. I'd also make sure that the speaker cables are not
resting on any other cables going to your computer.

Have you tried muting each 'sound control' one-by-one in the control panel
to see if it continues to happen (process of elimination attempt)?

If it's a real sound produced by an application I'd check the Add/Remove
Program options to see if something is installed. I know you have
anti-spyware software but apps can still slip and get installed. However,
ever since I've used MS Anti-Spyware software I'm no longer seeing stuff
getting installed w/o my consent.
 
I don't think it is interferfence but I updated the sound driver as you
suggested-odd sound still there. The sound is only occurs when a web page
loads-if it was interference then I would hear the sound at random times, I
think. I did go thru each sound in the control panel-none sound like my odd
sound. I also ran msconfig to make sure there were no new programs at
startup and also went to the control panel and scrolled through the
add/remove programs list-nothing there that I did not add myself or that did
not come with the computer.

I should also mention that I am running NetNanny in addition to SpySweeper
and Windows Washer and NV 2006.

Thanks for the post. Any other ideas? Any way for me to trap the sound and
capture to a file so others could hear it for diagnosis?
 
That's got to be obnoxious. This may be a little tedious but it's worth a
shot. Try running a search on your C drive (or other partitions if
applicable). Search using the 'all files and folders' option and then in the
'All or part of the file name:' field, search for *.wav

When the search completes, try playing every single file that's found. If
you do happen to find the sound, I would right-click the file and then
left-click properties. When the properties box shows up, check to see what
the location path is. Hopefully the path will point to some program file
directory and from there you should be able to find out which program the
sound is associated with. Once you have that info you should be able to poke
around in that program and shoot from there. Hope this helps and makes sense.
 
Here's what I did:

1. Ran a search using *.wav as criteria (all files and folders option)
2. Copied all wav files found into a desktop folder
3. Imported the wav files into Windows MovieMaker
4. Sorted the files in Moviemaker by duration
5. Eliminated any files with a duration over 5 seconds (my odd sound is
less than 2 seconds, maybe less than 1 second)
6. Created a wma file to be played on Windows media Player.
7. Played it.......once, twice, three times. My odd sound not there
8. Went back, used 2 seconds or less as criteria to make sure I didn't
miss it in the short sounds section. Made another wma file. Played
it.......once, twice, three times. My odd sound not there

I'm stumped............
 
I'm stumped just as much as you. I guess it's time to format that beast ;) lol

Seriously, I can't think of anything else that it could be. I mean from a
logical standpoint, what's the next option? Uninstalling each application
and just HOPE that you get rid of it that way. That's just silly especially
since we don't even know if a specific app is to blame. Where does one go
from here???? Hmmm...Get some candles going, burn a little incense and
change the paper in your printer. See if you can scare away those little
computer demons.

It's such a silly little problem and that's what's so frustrating. I highly
doubt this is possible but is there any way you can record the sound or find
something similar and I'll post my email address for you? Perhaps if fresh
ears heard it, it would strike a chord within and I may recognize it from
somewhere. Let me know what you think. Whichever you choose is fine with
me. Just trying to help... It would drive me batty.
 
I know you disabled the popup blocker sound but how about a sound when a
cookie is blocked?

It might be run out of a .dll (e.g. testable only as a res:// file)

Try using the Control Panel Sounds applet? E.g. Run...

control mmsys.cpl,,1


Alternatively, use RegMon and FileMon to trace registry and file accesses
when you recreate your symptom.

I hooked up a mic and placed it in front of the speaker. Then went to the
web and recorded the sound as a wav file. Be glad to send it to you. Don't
think there is a way to post sounds to this group site.

I'm willing to try anything. Is there a "cookie blocker" setting? I know
where the popup blocker setting is but not a cokkie blocker.
