Odd Problem: Files dragged onto Recycle Bin do not delete

Tim

I've noticed an odd problem today.

When I drag a file (say, from my desktop) onto the Recycle Bin and let go of it to delete it... the
file remains where it was and does not delete.

I thought, perhaps, it was deleted but the desktop wasn't refreshed or updated to reflect it. So, I
right-click on the desktop and select Refresh. File remains. I can even continue to open the file
after I've repeatedly dragged it onto the Recycle Bin.

I can right-click the file and select Delete and it does delete.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this problem is occurring and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Tim

Normal! You have to do a delete operation a second time on items moved into
the Recycle Bin to delete them permanently, as you have found out by the Rt.
click > Delete, or use the [Empty the Recycle Bin] in the Lt. pane. This is
a delete 'confirmation' procedure.

If you meant to say the Rt. click > Delete produced no response, then:
Rt. click Start > Properties >Customize in Start Menu > Advanced (tab)
select Enable dragging and dropping.

Ok I think you're on the wrong lines... so let me explain further.

Ok I understand what you are saying, and you took what I said wrong. I am not talking about
permanantely deleting a file. I'm talking about moving it to the recycle bin.

When I said I the file "remains" I meant this: I drag the file onto the recycle bin. The recycle bin
highlights as in I got it selected. I let go of the mouse button, and it "should" move that file
into the recycle bin. It does not. Nothing gets put in the recycle bin. The file remains on the
desktop where it was. The only way to put it into the desktop is to right-click on it, select delete
(and yes, remove permanantely, empty the recycle bin).

Now then, another problem has arrised today that makes me think this problem goes further than I
thought.

I tried to copy a file from another drive to my desktop (2 hard drives). I opened up my D:\ drive
and opened up the folder the file was in. I dragged it to my desktop to work with. The file icon
dragged over, and then a little "+" shortcut appeared in the lower corner of it (normal), but as
soon as I let go of the mouse button, no file copy action is performed. It's as if the entire drag &
drop subsystem (if you can call it that) is non-functional. I even right-click on the file (hold it
down) and drag it to my desktop, which should bring up a menu of whether or not I want to move,
copy, or cancel the operation, and that menu never appears.

Now that I have extended and hopefully have cleared up my problem... got any ideas?

Thanks

Have you put a tick against [Enable dragging and dropping] in the scroll
panel of the Advanced Customized Start Menu window as I said in my
*second* post, out of a total of three?

Bee.

Yes, but that has nothing to do with the problem. If you notice, that is in relation *only* to the
Start Menu items. I am not dealing with the start menu in my problems right now, just Windows
Explorer.

No, I meant if you meant drag and drop did not work. <g>

Nope, again, those registry keys are dealing with the start menu. My problem is *not* with the start
menu, but the rest of the system.

Running ULead VideoStudio 6 today to edit a video I just captured, I went into the "Filmstrip"
(Storyboard). It said I could just drag and drop a picture/video onto the filmstrip to begin (which
is what I normally do).

I dragged my capture file from my open Windows Explorer window on my D:\ drive (larger drive than my
master) onto the filmstrip. The file did not get dragged onto the filmstrip. I tried several
times... it was a no go.

It is as if a system-wide problem with Drag & Drop (even OLE Drag & Drop) is messed up, and I
haven't a clue what to do. Perhaps just wipe the system and start from scratch, but I really don't
have time for that just yet :-/

Didn't have to. I opened up the REG file and compared the entries it was going to put into my
registry with what was already in my registry. They match...

And again, that is dealing *ONLY* with the start menu. Disabling that will not allow you to drag
and drop things onto the start menu or let you move items in the start menu. Enabling/disabling
that option has no effect on other folders.
