Odd network behaviour.. solution?

Our local network has always had some odd behavior, and I'm wanting to know
if this is common, or if there's a solution.

Here's the deal. we both have xp home, and have a linksys router.

We share out internet connection fine. No problems there. when we search for
our network places, sometimes we'll see our other computers, sometimes not.

REALLY odd though, is if we do a search for them, they will then show up,
and work fine!

If they are visible, they also work fine.

Sharing is on, and everything is setup to work right, because otherwise when
we find them on the search, they would not work.

This is REALLY annoying, and I suspect is a source of some minor lag issues
with our local gaming.

Any clues what keeps making these disappear? why won;t they "stick"?

edit your lmhosts file and add you ip and machine name to
it. this should resolve your problem. the file is located
under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory. You will
find a lmhosts.sam --> you need to create one called
lmhosts with no file extension. teh .sam file is a sample
file which will tell you how to enter the info.

I don't know about disappearing but I have had to wait upward of 15
minutes for the full network to appear. I sometimes get that with my
DSL connection as well. It seems XP isn't finding the DHCP server IP
even though my firewall monitor indicates the IP is present. XP
ignores it sometimes and overwrites it with it's default IP.

Do you know if that can be made to work with a range of IP addresses?
My DSL ISP provides a DHCP IP which can change. The first two octets
seem to stay the same.

Ok, I USED to be able to find this info.. (ip address..) it's a run command,
right? (can't remember which one)

It's been a year since I messed with this stuff.. I finally gave up and just
used the search all the time, but it is time to make things right.

I tried ipconfig\all, but it opens a window up, and then closes it right
away...

Ok got my ip address (web hunting), and both our machines have the same ip
address.

so I add both of those and the computer names?

Never got a reply.. this will work if both computers have the same isp
address, but different names?
