Odd directories C:\[DIR00005435]

In using a program to recover a deleted file, I discovered a bunch of
directories at the root level of my hard drive, with funky names like
C:\[DIR0004323]. And, yes, the brackets were part of the directory name.
They had an odd variety of files in them. I can't find a way to "see" the
directories in any other program.

1. What are these? Should I be worried?
2. How can I get rid of them?

Thanks!

I have seen similar when using unerase programs and I am not sure exactly
where the names come from but it may be the way that the unerase program
identifies the folders. If you look at the contents of the folders it may
help you identify them. I would not worry about them unless they contain
data that you do not want on your computer. You would need to use a program
that scrubs your hard drive unused space to remove them from showing in your
unerase program by overwriting the space with random bits. Eraser is such a
tool and it is free. --- Steve

They are normally directories which contain recovered files. The original
directory name can't be used in case it conflicts with an existing
directory, so a random name is used (DIR followed by a number).

Delete them like any other directory. However, you might want to check the
files inside first in case they contain recovered data that you want to
keep - they'll probably all be called FIL followed by a random number, as
the original filename can't be used in case of conflicts.
