Odd behavior in system tray

MS Anti-spyware keeps adding more and more of it's icons
to the system tray when I am checking the System Explorer
and Real-Time Protection settings.

If I highlight the icons, then they go away.

This is not a very encouraging feature as it gives the
impression that it is spawning multiple copies of itself.

This is only happening on one of three machines where I
have it installed. This particular machine has something
in it which causes Windows to hang every couple of hours.

I've tried Ad-Aware, SpyBot and AdwareAway. Each of these
found things. I loaded AVG anti-virus which found a
couple of trojans. I was hoping that when MS Anti-spyware
found 12 items that at last, things would be back to
normal. But, it was not to be.

I think what you are seeing in the system tray is a bug. It might, however,
be a bug evidenced in the environment of a particular bit of malware.

Can I suggest that you restart in safe mode, and scan with both Microsoft
Antispyware and AVG 7 (update your definitions before switching to safe
mode) running scans with each until each gives your system a clean bill of
health? Use the full scan, rather than the quickscan in Microsoft
Antispyware.

Trojans are a hot area at the moment--I would encourage you to also try an
online scan from one of the vendors that offers this--Panda, Symantec, Trend
Micro.

Hello Peter,

I've had the same icon problem on one of four Windows XP computers running
MS Anti-Spyware. It's the only one on which I cannot start real-time protection.
All of the others work correctly.

The problematic computer is running Windows XP SP2. However, it has been
upgraded from several previous versions of Windows.
