Odd attachment error

M

Mick

This has only started occurring today. I am able to open
all my attachments, with the exception of any attachment
that consists of the same file name "resume.doc" of which
I receive 100s of this name. I am repeatedly receiving
the "...check folder permissions" error. I have renamed
all other files with this name, but nothing changes. I'm
using WINXP and Outlook 2003.

Check your C:\Documents and Settings\<<username>>\Local Settings\Temp
folder. With Outlook and all other apps closed, try deleting all the .tmp
files beginning with ~ in this folder. Restart Outlook.

Does it behave any differently?

Thanks for your reply, Patrick.

I've have already deleted all temp files - with or
without the tilde - to no effect. Whilst investigating
this issue, I've noted another glitch which may or may
not be related. The default folder for my .doc files
(C:\My Documents) is set to read only. Re-setting it with
ATTRIB has no effect. I suspect these two faults are
related, as a Word Temp file cannot be created in a "read
only" folder.

That's how XP displays it. If you can save other files there, it's fine.

Check your Registry (Start | Run | REGEDIT)
Look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
Is there a value named, "OutlookSecureTempFolder"? If so, this is where
Outlook is storing your temp files. It would be from that folder you'd
probably want to remove all temp files and see if Outlook behaves.

If that value doesn't exist, you should see a folder under Temporary
Internet Files beginning with OL in the name.

BINGO!!!
I searched long and hard - the registry gave nothing
away. Thankfully, I still remember how to hunt through
hidden directories in DOS. You're a legend, Patrick.
Problem solved. Thanks very much.
