Mel

I'm trying my hand at scanning documents and then editing and typing text in
them. I have and Epson 1250 scanner with factory OCR and have Microsoft
Office that has a scanning program. I have them interacting but I haven't
been able to get what I want yet with regard to being able to edit the
scanned documents. Is there a website where I can read on how get this to
work or do I have to upgrade the OCR program?

Mel,

I don't think Microsoft Office has a scanning program (unless
maybe it's in Office 2003 and I haven't heard about it yet??).

All scanning programs are different. (Many are annoyingly so.)
Normally the adjustment to get editable text is in the scanning
program, not in Word: you choose 'Scan to OCR' (or something
equivalently labeled) before you scan, and the scanned item then
appears in Word. It sounds like you're scanning to an image file,
which is the typical default for consumer-level scanning software.
Look in the Epson's help for how-to on getting OCR to work.

Hi Mark,

Both MS Office XP/2002 and Office System 2003 include
MS Document Imaging, with OCR. The Word 2003 version
does seem to be improved over the Office XP/2002 one.

For Office XP multipage TIFF is the only saveas format
available other than 'send to Word' after an OCR run.
For Office 2003 there is also a MS format (MDI) that
can scans can be saved to.

Hi Mel,

If you have MS Office XP/2002 MS Office Document Imaging
(aka MS Paper) can do OCR, but how well any OCR conversion
performs can depend on the original document. It can have
trouble if it picks up the paper background, smudges,
underline and 'fancy' fonts on the printed page (i.e. plainer
is easier for OCR <g>)

Equally as important as the original document quality is the quality of the
scanner. For consistent results, you need a scanner with a raw optical scan
resolution of 9,600dpi. Note that is raw optical scan resolution and not
software interpolated resolution.
