Hello,

Is that anyone that knows of an OCR software (to make text with a Tif, Bmp,
Jpg etc... picture of an only text newspaper)
I got already the freware OCRwocar25.zip that is supposed to make the job
but that software is for Win 98 and NT and I use Win XP Pro SP1. That
software was working fine years ago with 98 ...
Surprisingly as I wanted to decode a Tif file it gave me an RTF file that
was supposed to be an editable TEXT file with Word or else but it was
ANOTHER PICTURE !!!?!?!?!?
So a freeware will be welcome, it is to get occasionally some pic into text
of from newspaper or magazine.
Any info welcome and thanks.
John.

The default recommendation, because there is no other free OCR app.

But has anyone actually tried Simple OCR and found it useful?

Maybe it's just me, but I find it's not a very good program. It's not
accurate, the interface is weird, it has nags, etc. I would have to be
really desperate to use it, but again, maybe that's just me.

Same thing applies to all OCR programs - no matter how expensive they
are - I checked them all ... since 1983 !!!

Unfortunately, I've not been able to try it (my mother got my scanner ages
ago)

My sentiments exactly about the program. I'm glad that I don't have to
OCR very much and that a commercial program came with my scanner, even
if it is an LE version.

I agree.

Another serious problem that I discovered is that it won't
recognize anybody else's .tif files. It only understands the
..tif files that it creates direct from the scanner.

If anybody finds out how to use a .tif file from some other
program, I would be happy to know how.

I find that MS Office Document Imaging seldom makes an error, and the
interface couldn't be nicer.

Simple OCR will read almost any *1-bit* TIFF file.

Great. How do I convert a non-1-bit TIFF file to a 1-bit TIFF file?
I have converted the TIFF files that my program (IPPLUS) produces
to the TIFF files that various other graphic programs produce
but with no success.

Also, how in the world do you tell if a TIFF file is 1-bit or not?
I've never seen any program that would display that info.

Thanks for any help.

Try IrfanView, which is widely available. Its homepage is

Good luck.
