Running a SONY VAIO Pentium D with Ultimate SP1 and every now and then when
I do a restart or a hard reboot the machine will sit there. All the drives
run but no joy and no beep.. Then I turn it off and it may start or it may
not. This machine is getting near three years old and is on 18+ hours a
day.

Everything else is fine and there are no other issues with it. I am
thinking it may be the mobo battery. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi,

If you suspect the battery then change it. It's only a few dollars usually.
All it does is provide a trickle of power to the CMOS so that BIOS settings
are remembered when power is shut off. While it's possible that this is the
cause of the issue, it's not the most likely cause. The lack of the
initialization beep more likely means that the video is having trouble
restarting, and this may be an indicator of failing hardware.

Is this the only indicator of a failing card ? I am runnng the nTune
stability test and it hits a peak temp of 70 C without any other issues.
Other than the POST beep the card shows no other problems.

Hi,

It could have other meanings, though video is most common. Check your
motherboard manual or support site for a full definition of the meaning of
various beep/error codes for the model you have.
