Hi,

I upgraded a WIN98 machine to WINXP a while ago, and it went
reasonably well. However, I had an odd problem with O2K. After I
upgraded, I found that all my filters, and I have a lot, had lost the
reference to the correct folder. That is all the rules showed "move
to a [specified] folder." {Specified] meaning the default when you
create a rule, but before you give it the actual folder. And as I
found out, I had to fix each and every rule before I could
successfully save any of them. The first time, I did about half,
closed Outlook, and when I came back all were still showing
{specified]. When I fixed them all, Outlook saved the rules
correctly.

I am about to do the same upgrade on a similar machine. Is there a
way to prevent this from happening again?

Alan,

I can't find anythign documenting exactly what you described in your post,
and I must apologize for it as I know how painfull it must have been to
edit all those rules. The best recommendation I can make for you is to
backup your PST file. Outlook rules are saved as hidden items in your
Inbox, so if you make a copy of your existing PST file, and then perform
the upgrade, you have a copy fo your file backed up. Be warned though, not
all rules are able to be successfully upgraded from version to version of
Outlook.

If you encounter problems with upgrading again, please call Microsoft
Product Support Services. You have free warranty support that comes with
all versions of Office, and we would be more than happy to looka t any
problems you encounter after the upgrade.

Ryan,

Thanks for the info. I will try your suggestion and see what happens.
Bad case of "mouse wrist" otherwise! :)
