Although I didn't intend to look for responses to my message of
last Sunday (I came here to look for the link to Pixia, and where
can you find that better than in here), my news-reader brought me
to those responses. I must say I am very touched by all those
responses, and I think you all 'deserve' to know the reasons why I
stopped the site.

When I started my site, back in 1999, I couldn't think that it
would become such a hugh one. This year I reached more than 2000
links on my pages, and maintaining that number of links in a proper
way is a hell of a job. In the last months the site became 'my main
job', and it came that far that I spent most of my time in front of
my computer, reading the newsgroups, looking for new links to
freewaresites, checking links, making descriptions of the sites,
adding them to the pages, and so on. I almost forgot that I have a
wife, children, relatives and friends, and more and more the site
'ruled' my life. I'm very glad that I have a wife who made clear to
me that I really had to change something.

I considered to spend less time on my site, but I decided that that
wouldn't be an option. The danger of that would be that the quality
of the links should decrease, and that I wouldn't have any time
left to check the links on the pages for availability of freeware,
proper descriptions and so on. And, maybe a weak point for myself
is, I want to deliver quality, in so many things I do in life. So,
decreasing the quality of the links on my site, and of my site in
general, is something that I cannot live with.

An other point that concerned me was the possibility of having a
search-engine on the site. I realized that finding your way through
more than 2000 links could be a very hard one. I had a Javascript-
based search-engine on my site, but that had reached its limits
already long ago, and an other search-engine should mean, that I
needed an ISP with CGI- and/or PHP support. Such a provider is not
available for free here in the Netherlands, and I didn't want to
leave my basic idea of providing a site for 'free'.

I really don't know what I'll do with the database of all the sites
that I had mentioned on my site. At this very moment I don't want
to give it away. I have spend to many hours to create it, and it's
more and less 'a baby' for me. From the responses I understand that
a lot of you will miss the site. Please give me time to overthink
what my options are. In the meanwhile I'll lurk the group, because,
that is something I really must say, I sure missed it in the past
days.

With kind regards,

I commend you for realizing the priorities in life.

(still am in a way), I know what you mean by the time problem. Whatever you
end up doing, all the best. You are one of the good guys.

Henk a little tip that I forgot to tell you about the JAVA Script Search
engine

You can make it work quicker by spliting it up in smaller database files..

LINUX
MAC
PC
FONTS
Graphics

all in in different databases. You give the user the option what to search
for with differnt buttons and screnns etc... it gives the illusion to the
user they are searching a larger database when in fact it they choose a
smaller databse first and then search it...

Of course the PC db.js file will still be the biggest but now should be
alot small than before

Words can not express how much your hard work is appreciated Henk. However,
sometimes appreciation is not enough. Sometimes you need to get back to

Are you sure? Have you considered automating some things? I'm starting
to bog down a bit (I crossed the 1000 appz barrier this week!!) and I'm
looking into some automation to cut down on some of the repetitious
tasks...there's a lot of freeware stuff about to actually USE...not just
write about.

Henk....how big (in Mb) is your site? How much bandwidth do you use a
month? Maybe we can sort something out there. At the *very least*, I
could host a search engine for your site....there's several that trawl
specific remote sites. This isn't a problem. You have my email addy.

Best of luck and grateful thanks to you, whatever you decide. If you
decide to get back in the saddle, then you do have friends, and help is

Henk,

Your site is a masterpiece but I can certainly understand what must be
involved in maintaining it.

I don't know what the solution is. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say
that your site will be greatly missed by all here. But a man has to do what
he must do and nobody blames you for the decision you make.

Hopefully many of us will archive the site for future reference.

Good luck always.

Good luck, might I suggest one of two options? Scale back the site so
you only cover a few areas, or, divide it up into sections and ask for
volunteers to each become responsible for a section. Then you just
need to be "the boss" and coordinate things.

After all, I've found many an excellent app. on a site with a broken
link simply by noting the name of the app. and googling for it - and
when you really need that app. even a hint that it exists is welcome
news.

It's a great resource, and still would be if all it contained were

Hello Henk,

I went into shock when I read your earlier post - that was sad news. I'm
very glad to learn that you've decided not to leave the group
completely. I wish you all the best and hope you find contentment and
joy in your *new* life.

While you are pondering the future of your database you might consider a
"sabatical" or a permanent *retirement* - leaving the site available but
without updates.

The author of the TomCat Spyware list *retired* his database because
<quote>In order to provide such a service it is our duty to ensure that
all entries are accurate. We just don't have the time to keep up with
the verification of changes and new additions.</quote>

The TomCat *retirement* notice is here:
