I found in Control Panel XP home the icon 'NVIDIA nView'.
What is the purpose of this application and what are the normal
settings?

That's a utility for an Nvidia graphics card, it was installed with the
drivers or other software for that card. You might want to check the
documentation for your system or your graphics card or check the Nvidia web
site for information about it as it is not an XP utility.
