My Dell XPS 600 was having video problems when booting so they replaced my
motherboard and video card, but now I can not get the NVIDIA driver
(released by NVIDIA on June 1, 2007) to install correctly in Vista. The
Device Manager says "This device can not find enough resources that it can
use (Code12)"

Any idea what may be going on? Think a Vista reinstall will fix the
problem?

Regards,

Bill

w2m,

In Device Manager, under the Properties for the video card, click on the
Resources tab to see specifically what the problem is. If there is a
troubleshooting option available there, resort to using that. Let us know
what you find.

"This device can not find enough free resources that it can use. If you
want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices
on this system."

It seems like there is a memory or IRQ conflict. I aslo have an Angel TV
tunercard and a SoundBlaster Card.

w2m,

After removing two cards you still get the same results? That's really
strange. Here is something additional you can try. If you're not using any
serial ports (many PCs have two, on the back, but some only have one),
disable any and all serial ports in BIOS. That act will free up resources.
Reboot to see whether that helps. In addition, while in the BIOS, note any
resources not being used and disable them (on board audio, video, etc).

I'll post back with additional information on how to resolve IRQ conflicts.
In the meantime, post back on the results you get from the above steps.

w2m,

OK, here is a site that lists some steps involved in troubleshooting IRQ
conflicts. Take a look and determine whether any of the ideas presented can
be use by you:

http://www.webtechgeek.com/How-to-Resolve-IRQ-Conflict.htm

In addition, take a look at a Vista report that should show you which
device(s) are conflicting with your video card. Click on Start > Accessories
System Tools > System Information. Unfold Hardware Resources and look at
Conflicts/Sharing. Note what device(s) is/are sharing the video IRQ. Then,
determine whether you can disable it (them) in Device Manager or remove it
(them). You get the idea.

There is another Vista report you can look at to see what it discloses.
Click on Start > All Programs >Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions.
Peruse the report to determine what errors it contains and note any solutions
suggested. You never know. Follow wherever the evidence takes you. Post
back on results.

You are a big help Freddy! Thank-you.

I suspect that the replacement MOBO did not have an up to date BIOS for
VISTA. Install the latest BIOS from Dell to be sure.

w2m,

Yes, sharing is normal. The report ought to identify which of those devices
listed in Conflict/Sharing is a conflict, no? Both conflicts and sharing are
listed, but sharing is not a problem. I was hoping that the conflicting
device would be identified separately. If not, then that report doesn't help
in the way I was hoping.

The other poster's suggestion to upgrade BIOS to the latest version is also
a good idea. You can find such a BIOS on the website of the manufacturer of
your motherboard, or also possibly on the website of the manufacturer (Dell,
HP, Compaq, etc.) of your PC. You'll just have to track it down. Another
problem in all this is knowing what BIOS version you have installed on your
PC, so that you can identify whether you need to upgrade. You'll just have
to figure it out. Chances are that a BIOS upgrade wouldn't hurt. You have
to know how to do it.

Do the BIOS thing if you can't easily resolve the conflict issue. Don't
hesitate to seek assistance from a knowledgeable friend, or even a
professional if it comes to that. First, look at the posted suggestions and
see what you can do.

w3m,

I've now taken the time to look at the report in more detail. I have some
questions. Firstly, I'm depending on you to see whether the report indicates
there are any conflicts. The way the information is presented, it's hard to
tell what the report shows.

Here is the problem I'm having. The report begins by saying "Here are the
conflicts:" But then the next heading is titled, "Conflict Sharing:" I
suppose that's simply trying to show the title of the report, which should
read Conflicts/Sharing. That title means the report discloses both conflicts
and sharing. That's different from conflict sharing.

It's OK to have sharing. What I want to know is whether the report shows
any conflicts? What is on the report that shows that, if anything? If what
you posted is indeed the conflicts (not sharing), then this is a major
problem. I notice that there's only 2 IRQs listed. The full report should
have many more IRQs than that, perhaps well over 20. Does your report also
show those other IRQs?

You need to post back with some indication as to what I'm seeing. If
everything listed in your post involves conflicts, then this is more than I
expected. Am I asking too much? If so, don't hesitate to tell me.

w2m,

I've taken another look at the report, and from it I can't pinpoint the
problem. This is really hard, trying to do this from a distance. Lets see
what we can do. Try this:

In Device Manager, open the Properties of the video card and click on the
Resources tab. In that tab, you should see a box titled Conflicting Device
List. You will try to get rid of the list by changing the settings.

After unchecking the Use Automatic Settings, click on the Change Settings
button. You should now be able to see various options for changing the
settings. Try various settings in the hope of finding one (or however many
it takes to get rid of the conflicts in the Conflicting Device List). When
you select a setting that Windows likes, it will let you know that that
setting is available (not used). If it's being used, Windows should also let
you know that.

Post back on what happens. If you don't want to do this, don't hesitate in
saying so.

One last question: Have you gone into BIOS and disabled all devices you
aren't using? As suggested in my earlier post, find and disable serial ports
(you may have two) and anything else you find that you're not using. This
action will free up resources. That's the idea anyway. If you don't care to
do this step, that's OK. Let me know. This can get technical and it's
understandable if you feel reluctant in doing some of this. If this gets too
tough, you'll have to seek assistance nearer to where you live.

Freddy,
In Device Manager, open the Properties of the video card and click on the
Resources tab. In that tab, you should see a box titled Conflicting
Device
List. You will try to get rid of the list by changing the settings.

Unfortunately there is no button on the Resources tab or any other tab to do
this.
One last question: Have you gone into BIOS and disabled all devices you
aren't using? As suggested in my earlier post, find and disable serial
ports
(you may have two) and anything else you find that you're not using. This
action will free up resources. That's the idea anyway. If you don't care
to
do this step, that's OK. Let me know. This can get technical and it's
understandable if you feel reluctant in doing some of this. If this gets
too
tough, you'll have to seek assistance nearer to where you live.

I will disable the Com port and will advise.

Don't worry. I started with pc's with msdos 1 and every os since then. I
am also an application programmer.

Regards,

Bill

Freddy,

I might add that other than the video driver not installing the system seems
to work well with not error messages. The Dell diagnostic tests were run
and everything passed including the video card.

Regards,

Bill

w2m,

Well, I don't know what to say. Not being able to observe the situation
makes it difficult. Talking about installing the driver, did you run the
driver installation again? Is that what you mean when you say "still no
driver installed?"

How did the exercise in Device Manager work out? Did you try changing the
allocation or resources yet under the Resources tab?

What did you manage to disable in BIOS?

Is the BIOS set to allow the operating system to allocate resources?

In your initial post, you said that "they" changed the motherboard and the
video card. Is "they" Dell?

When did this problem with lack of resources start? Only after installing a
new video card? Is it an AGP or a PCIe card?

Did you confirm that the video card drivers are the correct ones?

After installing the new motherboard, did the motherboard chipset drivers
get installed?

What kind of motherboard is it (Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.)?

I'm asking because I'm shooting in the dark. Post back, and don't forget the
answers to above questions so that I can better understand. This is very
strange.

Freddy,

Thanks for all your help, but I think I am going to have someone put in a
new video card.
Well, I don't know what to say. Not being able to observe the situation
makes it difficult. Talking about installing the driver, did you run the
driver installation again? Is that what you mean when you say "still no
driver installed?"
Yes

How did the exercise in Device Manager work out? Did you try changing the
allocation or resources yet under the Resources tab? There is no option
presented to change resources as I said before.
What did you manage to disable in BIOS?

I disabled com ports and one other thing i can not remember right now.
Is the BIOS set to allow the operating system to allocate resources?
Yes

In your initial post, you said that "they" changed the motherboard and the
video card. Is "they" Dell?
Yes, but they will do no more work for me because I have a dual boot xp,
vista system which means the $ I spent for support until 2009 is now wasted.
Despite being a DELL customer for 20 years, I am going to give up on DELL.
If you do not just maintain JUST the OS shipped with the computer they drop
your support. Whixh means you can never upgrade your system EVER!

When did this problem with lack of resources start? Only after installing
a
new video card? Is it an AGP or a PCIe card?

6800 PCI card. It was supposed to be the same card and motherboard that was
in the system before the video problem started.

Did you confirm that the video card drivers are the correct ones?
Yes they are correct
After installing the new motherboard, did the motherboard chipset drivers
get installed?

No the DELL Support Technician said he did not do software! I called
support and then they dropped me because they said they did not support dual
boot systems.. The hardware guy who replaced the motherboard did not seem
to really know what he was doing anyway with respect to software I think,
especially Vista. He did not even know much of anything about Vista at all.
All he kept saying was that Vista has known problems....
What kind of motherboard is it (Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.)?

I have no idea... from DELL for an XPS 600.
I'm asking because I'm shooting in the dark. Post back, and don't forget
the
answers to above questions so that I can better understand. This is very
strange.

Yes it is strange. I have not see this kind of problem in any OS where no
matter what you did you could not get video drivers to install.

I have dropped DELL. This computer cost me $3,600 18 months ago. I thought
I had hardware and support for it through 2009. Now it is not worth much to
me unless I get a video card working. I plan on visiting a local repair
shop this week and try to see if they can put in a different video card and
hope that fixes the problem. If it does not then I will take it to the dump
and buy a new one but not from DELL.

Thanks for your time Freddy.

Bill

w2m,

I feel your pain. Only one more comment: Install the motherboard chipset
drivers. If those are missing, you can get the type of problem you have. It
does no harm to install them again, even if they have already been installed.
Only one word of caution about that. The chipset drivers must be Vista
compatible. When you installed the operating system, the chipset drivers
could have been installed by Vista, but I have no way of knowing. Vista has
motherboard chipset drivers for some motherboards, but not all. Dell should
have those vista drivers on its website available for download. Important!
Check that!

Good luck,

Freddy,

I replaced the nVidia with a EVGA e-GeForce 7300 Gs card (all I could get
locally) and the driver for it installed fine. I now have Aero. but my
windows activation is now missing.

Regards,

Bill

w2m,

Great going. Just reactivate. That's no big deal. I've had to do it
several times. Nothing to it. Microsoft doesn't care.

I wonder what the deal is about the video card drivers installing for the
present card but not the former. Go figure.
