After installing the newest drivers for Nvidia ( I have a geforce 6600)
windows works fine until i try to start windows messenger or windows media
player 10 then the whole system goes to pieces. The system slows right down
to a snails pace and the display keeps flashing between normal display and
black screen as if trying to refresh. Im currently using an old driver which
seems to work fine but I'd like to be able to update to the newest drivers to
play my newer games.

Anyone else had this happen and if so how did you overcome it? Ive tried
Nvidia site but couldnt find anything there to help.

Who is the manufacturer who made your video card video card... is it , Asus
BFG...ATI.??? and where did you download drivers from

what are the specs of your computer,, motherboard,,cpu, memory ??

I do have a couple of suggestions would like to know whats in your box so
Can better instruct on how to rectify the wonky video card problem .

The manufacturer is PNY I have been to their website looking for help but
there wasnt anything there. The drivers are downloaded from the nvidia site.

my comp specs are as follows:

Amd Athlon XP 2400+ (2 ghz) motherboard is ASrock (not quite sure of model)
1gb Ram
200gb hard drive
Nvidia Geforce 6600 LE

Any help is appreciated :)

Good Morning

My suggestion would be un-install the Nvidia video driver.

First find out the exact model of your motherboard. If you have your
computers documentation look at manual for exact model of motherboard or when
you start your computer the POST screen should tell you the model of
motherboard. Once you find out that info...

Then visit your motherboards manufacturers download website to download
bios & chipset drivers updates.

Website here http://www.asrock.com/support/index_download.asp.

Look for your exact model of motherboard click the link to go to its
download page and then download bios updates and chipset drivers.

Its not only important to update your video card drivers every so often.
Also your bios and chipset drivers need to be updated as well. With the
technology its all working together if any of the hardware pieces are lacking
the latest updates could cause wierd behaviour of your computer.

First download and install the updates for your chipset which might be VIA
or Nvidia chipset then update bios. Once this is done..

Then go to and download the latest directx from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx click the link that
says Get the Latest DirectX Here . Download and install the latest update for
directx ..you will have to be connected to net when running the directx
installer...Once this is done

When downloading and installing the Nvidia driver. Nvidia advises not to :

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any
drivers.

Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the
drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly. (any
antivirus should be disabled)

After this is done you should have no problem. Post your results when you
are done.

Good Evening

I have carried out the steps below and it seems to be working fine at the
moment.

I didnt need to update the bios as I already had the most recent version but
i think the charm was the direct x update (which i thought i had) and also
the agp update from asrock (again i thought i had doen this but obviously not
lol).

Thanks for all the help

Great! Good to hear that your video card is up and running.

For any future installs for Windows it is a good practise to instal drivers
in order. Thus preventing any confliction.

The order which I always install drivers on a new install of Windows is

1) Chipset drivers I always install the Sata hardisk controller first then
install the rest of the chipset drivers.

2) audio driver

3) CD/DVD drivers

4)ethernet driver

5) Directx

6) Video Card Driver

Number 2-4 really doesnt matter which order... thou I always leave the
directx and video driver for last.

Yup directx..lol that could do it. For the next video card update. When you
unistall the old video driver. Go to directx website and install the latest
directx before installing any newer driver version for your video card.
Should keep your vid card from doing wonky things.

Your welcome ... I am glad to have helped out and that your computer is back
to fully operational status

Have a good one!
