which I promptly undo by system restore... when I update the geforce
6100 drivers I can't get the monitor out of its lowest resolution.
Doesn't matter what I do in the settings, that's ignored. I have to go
back using system restore. What could that be, do we suppose please?
I'm updating as I get a lot of crashes lately.

Many thanks,

BB

These symptoms usually mean the video card is failing. Uninstall it and
swap it out for a known-working card. If that solves the issue, replace
the original video card.

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.

I should have mentioned it's an onboard chip. There's provision for me
to put a PCI-E card in there, though, maybe this is now a must as
opposed to an option?

For an onboard chip, from where was the driver update obtained. IOW,
the best place would be, first, from the maker of the motherboard and
second, from the NVIDIA website. Updating from the Microsoft update
site would be one of the least acceptable means of doing so.

I've tried various places as indicated by Googling and then through
driver zone. I've got the out of date drivers down to 11% say driver
zone uing options they suggested but the remaining download options
they suggest lead to problems I've had to remove by system restore.
