Are you sure you are using the correct Vista Drivers? There are 2 the X86
for 32 bit Vista systems and the X64 for 64 bit Vista systems.

I suggest that you make sure that system BIOS is up to date and then try
using WinUpdate from Vista to see if it will a driver that works.
How much memory does your 6600 card have?

Is there a problem with the current drivers that requires that you update
them?

Yes I downloaded the X86 version after I posted the post I downloaded them
again and still get the same message.
Am I stuck with Vista's own video drivers?

I finally gave up on the nVidia drivers. I get
exactly the same error with a 6200 & 256MB.

I have not found where to post my complaint with
nVidia. The one site I did find responded it
was not for video card support, but did not
offer another choice.

At this point I am contemplating switching to
ATI in hopes they have better support.

The card as 256 meg

Hi Adrian...

I encountered the same problem installing the Nvidia Vista (X86) drivers for
my FX5200 128MB card until I read the Vista Release Notes (Page 11) on the
Nvidia site. Go to Device Manager, then Display Adapter's Properties. Click
Update Driver then search for the Nvidia INF file in the folder you expanded
the driver download to. The Vista X86 88.61 video driver made a world of
difference in the performance of my system. Hope this helps

I did exactly as you describe and I still got
the error information as noted below. The
driver installation works for some people but
not for all. There is a problem with either
Vista, nVidia, or both. But who knows which?

The following my sound like a no brainer but the following suggestion made
the difference for one user a while back.
Are you running a dual boot sysem? If yes is the driver installation file
on the Vista system disk and are you running the installation from Vista?

In my experience, only the WDDM driver boxed with Vista will work completely.
Chipmunk is basically correct. One might try to disable the signing
requirements prior to installation, as the only problem using unsigned driver
seems to be compliance with the digital coding.

I am running 2 dual boot configurations.

1st is with Win x64 as C: & Vista x64 as D:.
nVidia unzips the files to the C: drive, but I
moved them to the D: drive. The default WDDM
from the Vista DVD refuses to install also.

2nd is with both Vista x86 & x64 on separate
partitions and the nVidia drivers will not
install properly in either configuration, but
the Vista WDDM drivers do. However, even the
default WDDM drivers will not enable all the
capabilities of the card properly in x64. I
cannot get 1024x748 with 32-bit color in x64,
thus no Aero. x86 gives me 1024x768 with Aero
in 32-bit color.

I am thinking about going to ATI as well. I have sent a complaint/request
to nVidia but all I got in reply was a link to a survey asking me how good I
thought they were but no advice on what to do to cure this problem. I
probably shouldnt update the driver but the game Battlefield 2 doesnt play
too well with the drivers that came with Vista.
I think I might go back to XP until this Vista thing is sorted and working
the way it should.

Thanks Chipmunk but I have tried to do that and still no difference. I am
still stuck with vgasave.

Adrian

No I am not running a dual boot system. I completely scrubbed XP. I
formatted the drive using fdisk and them format, before installing Vista
which then formatted the drive aswell.

Adrian

No I didnt have a virus program running I cannot get AVG to boot on startup,
It gives me an error message something along the lines of "Cant start the
kernal"
