Use it on *all* your formulas, especially if you're dealing in money.

Why is it that when using Excel sometimes the numbers
don't add up correctly? For instance:
Cell B8 has 216.08 in it and
Cell B10 has 252.72 in it but
the total shows 468.81 NOT 468.80. Am I doing something
wrong? Some of my formulas I'm using the Round function
and then to arrive at the 216.08 and the 252.72 I use a
simple subraction. Is there something I can do so the
number that displays on the screen is the actual number
and also so they add up correctly?

Thanks

Louis

Hi Louis

Excel is not wysiwyg. Put 2.4 in a cell and 2.4 in another, add them and you
get 4.8 in the third. Now format them with zero decimals and you'll see a
spreadsheet stating 2 + 2 = 5. Formatting does NOT change values, and
calculations are done with values.

In this case the real values are probably close to 216.084 and 252.724.
Widen the column width and/or remove cell formatting to see what the cells
really contains.

HTH. Best wishes Harald

To make Excel show the true sum do this: Click on
Tools>Options>Calculation and check "Precision as
Displayed" You may have to increase the number of decimal
places depending on how accurate you want your number.
Hope this helps you.
