When I try to type letters, such as "i" it shows as "5". The letter "U" shows
up as a "4". A backshlash shows up as a "0". How can I fix it?

I am not using Outlook Express. The problem occures with Internet Explorer 6.
Help and About reveal the following information about IE:

Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Update version: ; SP2;

On rare occasions, I've run into this keyboard/character mapping problem,
and rebooting fixed it. Tried that?
If no joy, then spyware/malware might be the problem.

Power off your machine and check your connections?

FWIW CharMap shows:
i = 0x69 5 = 0x35
U = 0x55 4 = 0x34
\ = 0x5C 0 = 0x30

Also scan codes (for United States Keyboard) show:
i = 0x17 5 = 0x06
U = 0x16 4 = 0x05
\ = 0x2B 0 = 0x0B

I can't say I can detect a pattern... ;}

Another thing which may be useful to do is use Regional and Language Options
to add another language's keyboard definition to toggle into and out of. E.g. Run...

control intl.cpl,,1

to start, if you don't already have a Language bar you can use for that.
(I.e., click on the Details... button in that applet's Languages tab,
then add a keyboard definition. Etc.)
