Numbering documents

Each Word document that I create needs to have a sequential "reference number" printed in the upper left corner of the first page.

For example:

001 gets assigned to the first document
002 gets assigned to the second document
003 gets assigned to the third document
004 gets assigned to the fourth document

How do I do this?
