Correction. Updated just now. As Mikey noted above, it's now, with update of
9/23,
6.0.251.

Thanks for all replies. I now have the latest AVG free prog and virus
database yet I still have a problem on laptop - I have to reactivate
the "Resident Shield" function every time I boot up the machine. I
have WinXP Home on Toshiba Satellite A10 laptop. Anyone else had this
happen and know of any solution? TIA, Denise.

There was a similar post at virus newsgroup , and a reinstall was needed
to remedy it.Obviously check firstly that you do not have "disable
resident shield ticked" in control centre. Also if you do reinstall
...empty the virus vault before uninstallation.

I wanted to give AVG a try. But as I followed the various and numerous
threads in this and other NGs I'm not shure because I got the
impression, that there are very often problems with AVG especially with
the handling of automatic and/or manual program- and database updates
and the uncertainty how long AVG will be freeware and support database
updates. No other antivirus program is discussed with such a intensity.
Am I wrong? This means not the possible quality of virus scanning of AVG.

Many thanks, I reinstalled the program and problem has gone.

I would recommend you try it. I have had no problems with it on my
main PC and the problem I had on laptop now sorted and I'm happy.
There is another free anti-virus program called Avast! which I hear is
also good. Not sure of link but a search will find it if you want to
check it out.

Ive never had a problem with avg on 98.There seems to have been a few
probs such as denises on xp , but usually a reinstall fixes that.Update
problems are usually to do with either ad blocking software blocking
akamai servers which avg sometimes uses or just shear traffic at the
free.grisoft.cz servers. The server can be changed in the free version to
help remedy this. Also if you use applications like netlaunch to launch
applications , then its easy to put the avg update path in so that you
can update avg without even opening the control centre and update manager
tabs.

I've never had a problem with it (the program or the automatic updates),
and I've used it for more than a year.

In regard to the future of the program, I guess all freeware, since we
are reliant on the goodness of philanthropic programmers, has the
possibility of being payware in the future. Get while the gettin's
good, I say.
