Number of files?

Anyone know of a simple and fast utility that will show the total
number of files on a PC's hard drives please?

My weekly NAV scan shows the grand total at the end of its very long
run, and I was mystified by a sudden increase this week from about
650k to 990k files. I've identified part of the surplus and done some
housekeeping, but don't want to have to repeat the multi-hour scan
just to see how many files I have. R-click>Properties just shows
*size* not number of files.

Thanks for the replies. That suggestion from Mel also came by email
from Fred Phillips. I'd completely overlooked (more accurately,
forgotten) that simple method! The only thing it doesn't do is add up
the file totals for all my four drives, but otherwise it's fine. And
it shows number of *files*, not number of 'objects' (presumably files
+ folders), which I assume will make it directly comparable with the
NAV figure.

Just go to the drive click Edit "select all" then go to File click "property" and it will tell you how many files and the amount of space used.

Thanks, Herbert, that's just the job!

(Interestingly, it gave a total of about 462k files, considerably
lower than NAV over recent months.)

Doesn't NAV count the files inside of zip files? Scanning a single zip
file with 100 files inside could report "100 files scanned". And do you
have NAV set to scan _all_ files, or only potentially viral extensions?

Many thanks, that looks like the explanation. I had NAV set to scan
all files, and to scan ZIP files. I've changed the former to 'Smart
scan'; is that generally regarded as sufficient? But for the moment
I've left the ZIP filers enabled. What's the consensus on that? I'd
have though to be safe... Couldn't see anything in Help about that
feature, BTW.

My own opinion - enable scanning inside zip files - use "smart" scanning
- and once a month, run a complete scan on all files regardless of type.
Also, run such a complete scan in the unhappy event that you detect or
experience a virus. Also, Norton has an "advanced" option somewhere to
turn on "heruristics" - this is a good thing, if you understand that it
may increase the level of false positives.

OK, thanks for that follow-up.
