I am trying to figure out how laptops in particular get
their default keyboard settings at startup. We have
noticed recently that our laptop num lock indicator lite
is on before the login. We could not turn it off until I
discovered a registry modification that changed it. Is
this registry setting something that was changed in one of
the windows 2000 service packs? Also, it appears like
once you login the num lock can change automatically based
on the username. How is this set?

For the current user; set numlock to on, then log off. Windows 2000 will
save your setting.

Windows NT/ 2000 ignores the bios on this issue.
Set the Reg_Sz string value of
"InitialKeyboardIndicators"="2"
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
will set the numlock to "On" when no one is logged on. May need to restart
for effect.
