Ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe

I have a Windows 2000 Professional system on which I use WordPerfect 6.1. Ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe services start up when I use WP 6.1 However, many time when attempting to shut down the computer I will get wowexec end program error. The system hangs and I am unable to use task manager to end the services or shut down the system. I have to manually shut down the computer. Any suggestions as to why these services hang on shut down of the computer?
 
They are both win sys files, wow.... being a win16 sub sys file.
Have you tried win update, or maybe wp6.1 update?
