ntvdm error

One of my users is getting an error with the following
information:

NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
....
c:\windows\sys32\msstdfmt.exe
cd:052eip:0106OD:fffff9fffe

this is after restarting his machine, a toshiba laptop
running winXP Pro

In need of some ideas

Could be a virus. run a few scans with any antivirus you
have, but try more than one. if you only have one, try a
free or online scan (www.grisoft.com - avg antivirus,
housecall.antivirus.com, or symantec's online scanner.
