ntuser file corrupt?

I previously posted about my mom who had a corrupted profile.

Today I set up two new profiles, one to move her to and one for me to
work in while doing so.

I rebooted and tried to move the ntuser file from her old profile to
the new one. At first was getting a cyclic redundacy error, thus the
reboot. It copied ok after that.

Then I switched user to the new profile (the new profile and the
working profile both came up ok before this). The new profile now
says it is corrupt or whatever and creates a temp one again.

Any work around for this?

Yes, start all over. The next time, leave the ntuser.dat file in your mom's
old folder alone.

It does not make much sense to do anything on a system that has
malicious software on it, so reduce the chances of that with these
scans, then troubleshoot your problem.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

How did you verify the original user profiled was corrupted or did
something not work and you think it might be corrupted?

What makes you think it is corrupted?

What does "says it is corrupt or whatever" mean? Is that the message
you see or do you see:

Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. You may
be logged in using a temporary User Profile.

Did you follow the instructions in the Microsoft article for copying
data from a corrupt user profile to a new user profile?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Once you get a proper login and the profile is copied, there are
instructions for how to move Outlook Express info.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188854/

Is that what you are using for email? Other things are different.

How do I get her email addresses and whatever else might be in there?
gone forever?

1. Most email software has a / File / Export function that
enables users to copy addresses and EMLs.
2. WinXP recommends the Documents and Settings Wizard
to "migrate" user data. This includes include/exclude check
boxes for addresses and EMLs.
3. If the OP set up a data backup routine for all users, the
data is there too.

She rebooted the machine. When rebooting, it said the profile was
corrupt and would set up a temp profile.

Yes. I setup two new profiles. One for her new profile. mom-
backup, (admin), and me (admin). I setup me, to work within the
other two. I copied the NT.xxx files from mom (original), to mom-
backup. I also opened both new ones to get them set. When I
copied the NT.xxx files from mom to mom-backup and re-entered mom-
backup I once again got the message that the NEW profile is corrupt
(or whatever the message says) and it would use a TEMP profile
again. This leads me to believe that the ntuser.dat file may be
broken?

What is in that file that is needed? Its 4308 kb in size. A lot
bigger than the new ntuser.dat files.

I will check again when I go over to see if the incredimail contacts
are somewhere that we can get them back. That is the main thing she
wants. I was able to copy favorites and her documents from MOM to
the MOM-backup folders. (I'm going to copy to a safe spot on the HD
so when/if I remove a user, I don't lose them. (actually will use a
thumb drive I think)

The other option I guess is a system restore? save what I can in case
something bad happens again.?

The Profiles are corrupt - most likely something in the Current User
registry.

*Don't* copy the NTUSER*.* files to the new profile. Do copy "Desktop",
"Favorites" and "My Documents". What about email - what email applications
was in use?
