$NTUninstall*** files

Hello all. Using XP Pro SP1. All security patches on SP1 loaded.

What is up with the approx 60 files named, for example,
$NtUninstallKB823182$; at c:\winnt\.
These are all the same in the filename except the ranging numbers after the
'...KB..'. Look to be windows patch temp files.
Can they be deleted to help clean up system.

These are the uninstall routines for various service pack and or hotfixes.
If you don't expect to ever require to back down from them then yes you can
delete them.

Well, in the first place, they're not causing any problems for your computer
or affecting its performance in any way, so there's no pressing need to
'clean them up.'

What you are seeing are compressed folders that are needed if you want to
uninstall any of the updates you installed from Windows Update. If you're
sure you won't want to uninstall any of those updates, sure, go ahead and
delete them. You'll free up some disk space.

Even if you delete the folders, you'll still have entries for the updates in
'Add or Remove Programs'. Here's how to get rid of those:

1. Delete one folder at a time.
2. Before you delete a folder, look for an entry with the same number in
'Add or Remove...'.
3. Now delete the folder, then try to uninstall the corresponding update.
You'll get a warning that the update has already been uninstalled and do you
want to remove the entry in 'Add or Remove...'. You can answer yes.

Time for you to upgrade to Service Pack 2 my friend. Tarry no longer!

Yes. Once you verify your system is running OK after a patch is installed, you
can delete those uninstall folders. They are only used to revert the system to
the previous state by uninstalling the patch.
