before i decided to change the boot screen. i changed the
boot screen and now my system hangs and then shut down and
starts backup again. it will show the new boot screen then
shut down and start over again. what i did was copied the
ntoskrnl.exe in the system32 folder to my document folder
to have as a back up. i then copied the down loaded boot
screen from my zip folder on my desktop to the system32
folder. i over wrote the orginal ntoskrnl.exe with the one
i down loaded. i also copied over the .bmp. now my system
dont run at all. can someone tell me how to fix this
problem. i dont know the path from the command promth to
my documents to get the orginal ntoskrnl.exe to put back
in the system32 folder? help me!!!!

If you have windows XP, you should have a system restore..I
know, that I see you may not be able to get into your
system, but I hoped this may help anyway. If not the
restore, then maybe you will just have to reformat and
reload all your system. Sorry ....

Recovery console.

Do a repair install.
Repair install sounds like your best bet. (if you have no back-up).

In the future, be CAREFUL about changing your ntoskrnl file with ones
found on the web! Files made on an sp1version of XP, WILL NOT work
on a non-sp1 version and vice-versa. This is more than a
"pretty-picture" file... it is a SYSTEM file. There are free tools on
the web that allow you to replace the bmp in your ntoskrnl file that
are a lot safer than just downloading other people's creations.

ALWAYS back-up the file first..... this can be done by saving a copy
of ntoskrnl.exe as ntoskrnl.bak. Then, in case of a bad experiance,
all you need to do is boot off a disk and delete the .exe file and
rename the .bak file to .exe. No harm done.

In addition to that, when you want to use a modified ntoskrnl.exe file, give it
an alternate name like Kernelmod.exe and then copy it to the %windir%\system32
folder. Edit the boot.ini and make a copy of the line that points windows.
Paste it above or below the normal boot line and edit it to look like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional Modified"
/fastdetect /KERNEL=kernelmod.exe. If you have problems booting to that modified
kernel, on your next boot just choose the original boot choice and go back to
boot.ini and delete the modified kernel line and no harm is done.
