XP home edition - totally up-to-date with updates/service packs (run in
automatic mode).
PROBLEM - Booted PC, POSTed, then got message on black screen "ntoskrnl
missing - needs re-loading" (or words to that effect) then total stop.
Powered off, re-booted - everything (apparently) normal, XP loaded, pc
apparently working normally.
File search on "ntoskrnl" - C:\Windows\System 32 (and subdirectory
\dllcache) both contain ntoskrnl.exe 5.1.2600.1151 dated 19.04.2003 02.00,
both 1881KB
However, C:|Windows\LastGood.Tmp.\System32 - same file is dated 08.09.2003
16.28 and is 1995 kbs (appears to relate to Q811493 per $uninstall$
directory.
QUESTIONS -
1/ Which file which should be running ?
2/ If the 8th Sept version is the correct one - how do I now get back
"up-to-date" ? I am assuming that the OS has automatically reverted to
"lastgood" status, in which case there's likely to be more than just one dll
out of date, so probablity is there's more than one "updated" file has
reverted. I'd prefer to have a valid OS rather than one repaired bit by bit.
