Hey guys, last night I restarted my comp only to find that my notsknrl.exe is corrupt or missing.

The computer is running Win XP sp2 Home ed., and I built this thing brand new about two months ago.

Now, I have the XP disc w/ me and I've used the recovery console to copy the file into system32 from the driver cache, and even though it says the file has been copied successfully, I still can't get to windows.

The HD was oem (newegg.com), and I'm beginning to wonder if it has died already. However, I didn't have much saved on there that I can't get back, so I"m not totally against a fresh install of Win XP, formatting the HD, or simply buying a new one (although I"d like to avoid that hassle...).

Anyone want to help?

If you dont mind taking a risk with your data try this (dont know if it works :D)

I had this same problem, i know how to deal with it but i dont want to risk you over writing your information.
This is from memory so it may not be accurate
1) insert windows cd and set computer to start from cd drive
2) then boot from the windows cd, once it give you the option to install window on a partion choose it
3) If i am correct then the cd will detect that you have a 'damaged' install and will give you the option to repair windows (not to be confused with the other repair tool)
4) select it and it should work

It worked for me
dont try it unless you dont mind a fresh install if things dont work

Alf.. that'll be my last call option!

I'm not really harboring any super important data, so fresh install isn't far off my OK scenarios list.
I'm gonna wait a few days, if I can't get it to work over the weekend, then Monday i'm gonna go w/ that.

Anyway, i rebuilt the bootcfg file and now i'm missing the hal.dll file. What do I do?
On another note, I tried expanding ntoskrnl.exe, except expand is not recognized, however, copy is but Access is Denied... so I can't do that.
Any ideas?

when you boot from your cd run windows recovery. and run check disk on your hard drive, (type 'help' for list of commands) to check for bad sectors and repair them, it may help.

I ran a diagnostic from WD. Said there were too many errors. Replace Hard Drive.

So.. I'm RMA"ing it w/ Newegg. Hopefully it'll "pass" their inspection and I"ll get a new HD.
