ntoskrnl.exe error - initial boot - SATA

Hi, i'm making my first attempt at putting together a system with a SATA hdd.
Running a Soyo K8USA mobo, Hitachi 120gb SATA HDD (single hdd). I've gotten
updated ALI SATA drivers from soyo's website and install them during the
windows 2000 boot, partition the HDD into 2 60gig partitions, format the
first partition and attempt to install windows. Files seem to copy correctly,
however, after reboot I get hung at the starting windows screen, with an
error "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt <windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy
o the above file."
I've tried initiating the install 5x now with the same response, once I
tried a fixboot from command prompt, the reboot resulted in a similar error,
but for HAL.dll.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion Dave, but the article didnt help. I've since tried
reformatting, cutting back to a 40 gig partitiion.... still the same result.
I read an article related to editing the boot.ini, and making sure the its
looking to the right boot partition however i'm not able to locate it when
browsing through the install. I'm eager to hear any other suggestions you
might have, thanks again!
 
Look again for boot.ini, which is a hidden/readonly/system file on the
first primary partition of HDD0 (usually C:\). To see/edit it you must
remove those attributes. You can do this on another machine by attaching
the drive to that machine as a slave or secondary master. Note however
that boot.ini does not exist in the W2k install package; it is created
during the install process. I suspect boot.ini is not your problem, but
have no experience of SATA - and I've been wrong before.

It is a small text file you can edit like any other. To edit it, you
must understand the meanings of various parameters; that info is
splattered all over the web.

Below is a typical 5-line boot.ini file, in its entirety, for a
single-OS PC. Watch out for the wrap on the last line, and note that
unlike the other parenthetical parameters (where 0 means "first"), the
partition parameter indexes from 1 (1 means "first"):

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
