NTOSKERNEL.exe missing or corrupted

I used microsoft update to install the latest patch and
now I can't boot to windows. I get a windows 2000
root/system32/ntoskernel.exe is missing or corrupted. I
archived the files during the install, but is there anyway
to replace the kernel w/o loosing my data on the hard
drive?
 
I also am getting a ntoskernl.exe error, but fortunately
only on shutdown. When I shut down, I get a memory dump
and the error message. This began right after installing
the latest Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB824146) and
817787: Security Update Windows Media Player 7.1.
 
How have you done? I tried replacing the ntoskrnl.exe
with identical one from another machine which was not
experiencing problems. I also tried uninstalling the
latest patch. Neither helped my situation. Have your tried
the repair? Did it correct your problem?
 
I actually copied the NTOSKERNEL.exe from the CD and into
the system32 directory. Now I can get all the way to the
Windows 2000 splash screen but my PC keeps restarting
after that and will not go into windows. I did try the
repair from the CD and that did NOTHING!! Any ideas?
 
I am not sure our problems are the same. My machine works
ok except when I shut it down. Then I get the error
message about ntoskrnl.exe at address 804F703C at
80400000. Also the resident programs like norton antivirus
sometimes will not quit on their own.
In addition, I have noticed many Email's bouncing - ones
that I have not sent. Therefore I am suspecting a virus.
As I have stated, I run Nortons and keep the definitions
updated, but....
I am currently running a scan from Norton's website.
When that finishes, I am going to pay for their support. I
will let you know what I find out.
By the way, have you been getting Email messages from
Microsoft reccomending updating, with a link to do so? I
suspected these from the start and have not followed any
of the links, but have only used the path under the start
menu.
