Hi All,

I'm quite sure that i'm asking a pretty damn obvious
question but apologies in advance!

I have a pc at home running w2k pro, i am getting "ntldr
is missing" errors on startup. I have tried to copy ntldr
across in recovery console by booting off the w2k pro cd
but i get "access is denied." I have run the manual and
fast repairs but when it tries to copy over ntldr and
ntdetect.com it fails and you have to skip the files.

I have also tried to reinstall w2k in another directory
but it again failed to copy over the two files onto root.

Can anyone suggest how i go about creating bootable
floppies wihtout network? I believe that you can't do a
format a: /s anymore under w2k so i need help with that as
well!

I just need to access my data, back it up and re-install
w2k.

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like another case of someone moving from the
group of never-back-up-anything to the group of back-up-
things-every-week . . .

Please state if your partition is FAT32 or NTFS.

In the meantime you can boot your machine like so:
- Format a floppy disk under Win2000
- Copy ntdetect.com, ntldr and c:\boot.ini to your
floppy disk.
- Boot your machine with this disk.

If you get desperate then you can copy your irreplaceable
files to some other disk by booting your machine with a
Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) and running ntfsdos.exe
(www.sysinternals.com) to access your NTFS partition.
You will probably get short file names only. Backing up
your files every week would be much less painful.
