A couple of things to check: (1) after the cloning, did you remove the old
disk and attach the new disk to the same position on the IDE cable? (2)
Did you remember to check/change the jumpers on the new disk to "master" or
possibly cable select, depending on the instructions that came with the new
disk? (3) If the new disk is ATA/100 or 133, did you install the 80-pin
cable that probably came with it? Using a 40-pin cable on these faster
disks is not allowed by XP, alhough older operating systems will let you try
it. (4) Is the partition with XP on it on the new disk "active". Us ethe
GDISK routine that comes with GHOST to interrogate the disk. However, be
careful, since GDISK can also do what FDISK does (i.e., create/destroy
partitions). (5) Is this a simple system with XP on C:\? If not, be aware
that NTLDR and a few other key files must be on C:\, no matter where XP is
located. And, BOOT.INI must then point to the location of XP. (6) If the
XP partiton was FAT32, use a boot floppy to see whether there is anyting on
the partition. If not FAT32, run the recovery console form the XP CDROM.
This is a DOS-like environment which can see both FAT and NTFS partitions.
Does it see the new disk?
