NTLDR is compressed?

What are some "conditions" that would/could contribute to receiving an error
"NTLDR is compressed" upon bootup with windows XP home? The error condition
is similar to "NTLDR is missing." where the machine simply stops booting
during POST.

File format is NTFS and this machine has never had an upgrade to the OS...xp
out of the box. The machine has booted up previously. Unfortunately I
don't have enough info to post as to events leading up to issue beginning to
occur.

Anyone's contribution will be appreciated.

Have you tried to use the recovery console yet?

If not, try booting off the Windows XP CD, and press 'R'
for the recovery console.

Follow prompts until you get to the command line (after
logging in).

Now type "fixboot" to see if it will repair the boot
sector, most of the time that will fix the problem you are
having.

If that does not help, try running "chkdsk /fix" from the
recovery console.

Best of luck with getting it fixed.
