A W98SE computer was working normally, normal shutdown. Two weeks later,
bootup, I see the error message: "NTLDR is missing, hit any key"

Don't believe this machine ever had any NT programs on it.

I plan to put in a W98 boot disk, but still- where does the message come
from in W98?

It can happen if it had a floppy diskette formatted on an NT system in
the drive when the computer boots. You say that it was always a Windows
98 only computer?

I can't swear to it as it is used, only 450 MHZ, from an "expert", figure
he kept it in W98. When it first showed the error message, there was no
boot disk used, it had been booting in W98 and one day this message.

Then the only way this could have happened is for the boot sector or the
master boot record of the machine to have been fiddled with.
