I want to convert my drives to NTFS from FAT32. I get the
message that drive will be dismounted, and all open
handles will be lost.

Is this bad?

Also, I've lost the listing for the win.ini, and sys.ini
in msconfig. When I open them, the pages are blank?

Now those are two good questions.

In order to convert a drive to NTFS, Windows XP needs to have exclusive
access to that drive. Therefore, the drive will be 'dismounted', meaning
that it will be inaccessible (to anything other than the conversion
procedure), so if you have any open programs or processes running in the
background, those 'handles' will be irretrievably shut down. It's not really
a matter of good or bad, that's just how the conversion process works.

Both win.ini and sys.ini are actually unnecessary in Windows XP. Those two
files are set up only to provide compatibility with software designed for
Win 9x, that looks to those files for configuration information. If your
software is of contemporary vintage, those files will never get used.
They're not even present on the copy of XP Pro that I use at work. They do
exist in the copy of XP Home that I use at home, however, so hopefully
another poster can add some information here.

the only time you will need to win.ini and sys.ini files
is like "Rocket" said, when using older programs. if you
are using the computer as a home computer and have games
you want to run off it, then your best bet would be to
run a repair for windows to replace the files or you can
find them on various download sites online.
