Helo...

One of our computers has hardware problem and now we want to
copy all files and directories from that harddrive to another.
However if we set the harddrive from the broken machine as slave
into another machine and try to copy the data its says that we dont
have permission to do that. Both disks are has windows 2000 professional
as their operating system.

But the beginning of the harddrive from the broken machine is corrupt
so we cant use it to boot with and use our new harddrive as slave.

In windows 2000 with the harddrive from the broken machine as slave,
we dont have ntfs right to access the data. We can only see the
active permissions, but not change. We are logged on as administrator.

How can we get access to the data?

Hi Lennart,

First of all, please make sure that these files are not encrypted with EFS.
Otherwise, you will not be able to access them without the encryption
certificate.

Then, you need to take ownership of these files. If you are unable to
access the "Security" tab from the "Properties" page to use
"Advanced"->"Owner" to take ownership, you can try to use the command line
utility: Xcacls.exe. Please refer to the following article to use this
utility to take the ownership and set the required permission of the files
you would like to access.

Also, this kind of issue can be caused by various reasons. Please refer to
the following article to see if that meets you scenario.

Please let me know if this solves this issue or if you need further
assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.
