NTFS Reader

I was looking for a program that can read a NTFS partition from Windows 98.
I have my PC setup as hot swap drive so that I boot from various operating
systems. I have 2 drives off a controller card but they are NTFS. I would
like to keep them that way, but I would like some kind of reader in Win 98
so that I can transfer files between my FAT32 Win98 drive and the 2 Hard
Drives on NTFS. Does anybody know of some kind of program that can do this?

NTFS for windows 98, from sysinternals.
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/ntfswin98.shtml

The freeware version reads from the NTFS drives, but does not write to
them. There is a payware version that can write to the NTFS drives.

FWIW, I find it easier to keep a FAT32 partition accessible to all
OS's, and let them transfer files that way. But YMMV. :)

No freeware that offers write access, only read. And cheapest
commercial solution I know of is USD39, for the Mount Everything
package by Paragon. See my other reply in this thread.

Consider you needs, like - if you don't need to copy that much and
that often - I would try create a small FAt partition on the NFTS
drive(s) (maybe you need to shrink your NTFS partition(s) first to
make room) and use that as a temp storage for files that needs to be
transferred to your Win98 drive. Alternatively if you have room on
your Win98 drive, make room for a "tiny" NT/Win2k or XP installation,
make a dual boot setup and boot to the new NTFS enabled OS when you
need to copy files to/from the other NTFS drives. Both suggestions are
less practical than just mounting a NTFS drive from Win98 and copy
files to and from it when you need too, but still - it is doable.

Another free read only alternative is NFTS Reader for DOS:
NTFS for windows 98, from sysinternals.

The freeware version reads from the NTFS drives, but does not write to
them. There is a payware version that can write to the NTFS drives.

Is or was. I think the price used to be something like USD 399.
SysInternals offers only free sofware, their sister - Wininternals
sells. But they no longer carry NTFS DOS as a single product it seems,
only as part of their even more expensive Admin package. At least that
is what I make of it when browsing <http://www.wininternals.com>

Far less expensive, still not free though, is "Mount Everything"
at USD 39 from Paragon <http://www.paragon-gmbh.com/> . They used of
offer a "NFTS for Win98" for "only" USD 29, but it seems this have now
been replaced by their new Mount Everything package.

NTFS for Windows 98 is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks alot for all
your help!!!

Hi Bjorn - Just a question - Have you used the Mount Everything package
personally? In reading about it, it implies that it only offers read access
from DOS. Is that correct or does it, in fact, handle both read and write
from DOS? TIA

No, but I have used their NTFS for Win98. Btw I was mistaken when I
said they no longer sell the Win98 (USD 29) package, it just did not
show up on the main page with all the other packages. Found it now in
the menus when browsing the site.

No, you are right, the personal version (USD 39) only offers read only
under DOS, while full read/write under Windows 9x/Me (and Linux). Only
their Pro version (USD 149) offers full read/write under DOS. Did not
notice this difference last time I looked (btw OP asked for Win98).
For the curios; manuals in pdf format can be downloaded from their
site.

To keep this on topic; I would of course love to hear about any
freeware alternatives that offers full NTFS read/write access under
either Win9x or Dos - or preferably both. But as said - I don't know
any my self. And this is why I have taken the liberty to mention the
commercial options from Paragon here, also since their programs are
less expensive compared to the more well known and often mentioned
NTFSDOS solution from Wininternals.com.

For Windows NT 3,5 & NT 4.0 you could try http://www.cgsecurity.org/ (NTFS4)

Could not find any entry for writing to an NTFS5 partition, uless you pay
for it (Ok, alright I found several entries for download, but those should
be classified as illegalware. those were - strange enough - .jp or .ru
sites)

If found it at http://r2.d2.hu/snf/main.php?c=1 A freeware site

I checked this out, and find it interesting that they essentially do
the same thing that the Linux Captive utility does - they use the
Windows NTFS drivers and put them in a "wrapper".
Maybe that's where the Captive developer got his idea.

Since I'm putting Windows 2000 and XP on my machine shortly, and may
want to keep 98 on it as well, and may want to have a small NTFS
partition just for grins, I may get this thing myself.
