NTFS long filenames - DOS 8.3 naming

On opening a long filename document and doing Save As provides the 8.3 conversion - how do you always have the Save As providing the long filename?

The file name protocol is determined by windows, but if it is only Word that
has this problem, may I suggest that you re-register word
