NTFS...GONE!

For some unknown reason (probably a G-D virus) after I rebooted my computer
today, one of my hard drives no longer had files on it (at least to the
naked eye) Disk manager says the drive is 100% available and there is no
NTFS but it is healthy. So I've been told the files are still there and I
have down;loaded a trial of a data recovery software program, but it is
calling all the files (recovered file 1, recovered file 2, etc.) Is there a
way to retrieve these files "less" painfully?

You're in good shape so far -- stop playing with the drive (as it seems
you know) and head here:

Data Recovery Tools:
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/system/fwdatarecovery.html

One of those tools, all free and malware free, should do the trick for you
IIRC. It's been ages but the last one I had used was the third one down and,
again, IIRC had MOSTLY the file name intact. The reason the name is off is
because when stuff is deleted it's just really renamed and not actually
deleted. Thus the convention for renaming them varies by application but the
one I'd used from there was pretty decent at giving me at least enough of a
clue to go on.

Your real problem is not running an up-to-date antivirus program.

It that's what it was.

Doesn't sound like it, sounds like HD/controller fart.

Nice job of rubbing salt in the wound. Have
some sympathy, next time it may be you asking
for help.

So what is an "Up To Date" virus program called. Apparently it's not Norton
Antivirus, AVG or McAfee (which update themselves EVERYDAY!)

Thanks Galen, I am guessing you mean the "PC Inspector Smart Recovery"
program? I didn't see anything called IIRC. But the reviews on the other
ones seemed pretty good.

LOL "If I Recall Correctly" would be IIRC. ;)
