NTFS format of compact flash fails

I have an IDE flash adapter and a 512 mb Crucial CF card.
The CF shows up as non-removable, and I can partition it.
I have the choice of FAT, FAT32, and NTFS when
formatting. NTFS always formats to 100% then fails. No
explanation other than the failure pop up. If I format
FAT32, then convert d: /fs:ntfs, I get an I/O error after
a long wait.

Any ideas?

Regards.

You are under 2mb in size! Stay with FAT32. NTFS is slower under 2Mb in
size.
I use a similar device and have formatted with FAT32 and it works great!

I've formatted 384mb SanDisk CF cards NTFS with no problems. I didn't do
anything special or tricky to get it to work. Sorry I couldn't be more
helpful.

Its the IDE cable!

If I use an 80 pin udma cable, I cannot format CF card as
NTFS. In fact, the system barely boots. Its seems to
hang for 10 seconds, run for a millsec, hang for 10
seconds, run for a millisec, etc. Sometimes it works
until I try to format CF as NTFS.

If I use an old-fashioned 40 IDE cable, everything works
OK. NTFS CF format is fine. No slowdowns.

I've tried 4 different 80 pin cables. All fail.
I've tried 3 different 40 pin cables. All work.
I've tested this idea on 2 different computers. Its the
cable.

I'm using an ACS IDE - CF adapter and Crucial 512mb CF
card. If I use a 128mb SimpleTech CF card everything
works, the cable doesn't matter. I don't have another IDE
CF adapter to try.
