A friend accidently converted a FAT32 partition to NTFS when adding W2K to
his ME system. Is there a way to convert it back?

Version 5 of Partition Magic(which I have) only converts _to_ NTFS, not
_from_. What version converts from?

7 or 8 will deal with late versions of NTFS.

The newest version.

But you first must make sure you don't have any NTFS compressed
folders or files on the drive (usually show up in blue). It won't
run if compressed stuff is there.

Good luck.

My suggestion would be for him to just abandon ME and stick with W2K; perhaps this was his
subconscious desire all along. :)

And you think that answers my question?

Yes, Brad gave you a viable method to use FAT32 (but not on how to convert
it). Don't expect everyone to be a genius here on every software utility
that exists. This is a group of your peers volunteering their time. As
such, expertise will vary. Not everyone knows of the capabilities of
PartitionMagic or other disk software. You didn't! If you would prefer a
different answer then prod for more replies by saying something like, "I'd
rather not do that. Too extreme. Any other solutions?" Of course, Brad
could have been less terse and mentioned that *Windows* doesn't provide an
option to revert from NTFS back to FAT.

Is your friend dual- or multi-booting different versions of Windows of which
one or more of them is still a 95-based version of Windows? It sounds like
that since you said your friend "added" Windows 2000 instead of upgrading
(whether a dirty or fresh upgrade).

No, converting a disk from FAT32 to NTFS is like upgrading a basic
disk to a dynamic disk. You can't go back, and if you do it will
destroy everthing. i.e. you will have to reformat the HDD. Sorry

Let's clarify this once and for all.

Q: Is there any way to convert a drive from NTFS back to FAT32, using
the Windows operating system?

A: No. The only way to convert drives in Windows 2000 or XP is to
use the command line utility "Convert". This only has options to
convert to NTFS, not the other way round.

Q: Can it be done any other way?

A: Up until a couple of years ago, Microsoft said No, It Can't Be
Done (TM). Then Powerquest released a version of the Partition Magic
utility that converted NTFS back to FAT32, with no loss of data. A
few months later Microsoft admitted Well...Yes It Could Be Done (TM).

Q: Will it destroy my data?

A: It might do, but only in so much as any disk operation "might"
destroy data. In my experience it doesn't I've just used Partition
Magic to convert an NTFS drive back to FAT32 (on my other PC), as I
write this. No data destroyed. It's unlikely Powerquest would add a
feature to PQMagic that had a strong tendency to destroy data.
