Greetings all. I've been trudging around the internet for
quite some time looking for this problem and have yet to
find an answer. I appologize if it's been posted before,
but due to a lack of time, I didn't feel like walking
through the posts since a search turned up nothing.
Enjoy. :)

I recently built a computer and installed Windows XP Pro
w/SP1. It installed beautifully and ran like a race horse
for about 3 weeks. Suddenly, one day, I come home to find
my screen displaying:

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\ntfs.sys

Odd, since I left the computer in a locked state when I
left, but none the less I sat down to solve this
conundrum. I rebooted to find myself starring at a black
screen where the XP splash screen should have been.
Noticing no HDD movement, and after about 15 minutes, I
hit reset after inserting my setup CD.

I booted up to the Recovery Console and ran a chkdsk
(Check Disk). It came back saying there were one or more
errors found. So, I re-ran the chkdsk with the /r tag and
went to bed. I awoke to find the computer sitting at 51%
completion. Thinking nothing of it, and having no time
before work to worry, I left it until later. When I
returned, it was still at 51%. Assuming a hardlock, I
reset the computer and booted back into setup. I told it
to repair the Windows installation while leaving the file
system inplace.

Rebooted... nothing.

I looked online and found that copying the NTFS.sys file
from the install CD would eleviate this problem. After
doing so in the Recovery Console, still nothing.

I read that XP is very, very (very), picky about what
hardware the system is made up with. Several suggestions
to people with similar problems was to replace the RAM
sticks inplace. No responses were posted, so I have yet to
try the idea myself. However, I will be doing so tonight
since my options are running thin.

Why haven't you formated, you may ask? Well, it's not
actually my computer, but a computer I built for a friend.
I'd like to keep the file system intact, however, I fear
that I may be forced to format if I can't find a solution
by the end of the week. If that step must be taken, I'm
going with Windows 2K, since I know it works. :P

I hope that someone out there has some information
regarding this process. If anyone could point me to a
sight, forums, or email address of some useful information
I would really appriciate it.

'Till next time...

Boot to the XP disk and do a repair install. Follow the menus to install /
repair present installation. The procedure will repair the present XP
installation and retain files programs and settings. Jym

I've done that already, both repair types. Just plain
repairing it and a full install over the current file
system... nothing...

I just took out one of the two RAM sticks and it's stuck
at a blank screen. I'm leaving it be to see if it presents
any kind of message... but it looks like Windows 2K is the
only thing fixing this error... gg MS!
