I am having a problem backing up the system state using Yosemete's
Tapeware. Specically, when it get to the sysvol entity, it hangs.
There is no problem with Windows booting, or users logging on or getting
to their shares and permissions are all functioning.

The sofware vender tells me that the problem is a corrupt DC Data Base,
which was moved, using NTDSUtil from the E: drive to the boot drive.
There is no NTDS.PAT file, and Yosemete tells me therein lies the problem.

Questions:

1. Where does NTDS.PAT come from?
2. What is it's function?
3. Can I recreate or rebuild it?
4. How.

Thanks.

NTDS.PAT is a backup of NTDS.DIT with is the active directory database on a
domain controller. NTDS.PAT would be created by the backup program which
initiates creating a backup of NTDS.DIT. One way to determine if there is
an issue with Tapeware is to use Windows 2000's backup program to perform a
backup of the system state. It should successfully backup the system state
of the server. If there was a corrupt active directory database then you
would not be able to boot into the server, getting an LSASS.EXE error
before the login screen.
