NTDS.DIT not on backup

The sole domain controller and exchange server failed. I
went to the backup to restore. Even though system state
was backed up it does not restore ntds.ditherfore the
active directory is down. Any ideas would help, I have
to get the excahnge up and running again.

You must boot to Active Directory Restore Mode to do the restore.
