the usual problem! The power supply on my laptop died recently so i
moved the hard drive from it into another laptop but i'm getting the
'NTDRL is missing' error. i've booted it up off the win2000 cd and run
the repair bit. but same error happening. any further ideas. i'm not
formatting the hard disk! should u used the recovery console to replace
the missing files from somewhere?

thanks

There are two problems when porting a Win2000 disk from
one machine to another:
- You may face serious hardware issues. A "Repair Installation"
may fix them. Boot the machine with your Win2000 CD, then
select "Install", then "Repair".
- The disk geometry (heads/cylinders/sectors) may not be acceptable
to the new machine. If so then only a complete repartition/format
will fix the problem.

If this was my machine then I would do a fresh installation.

You must, of course, back up all important files before doing any
of the above.

I've had the above problem several times and it is a royal pain in the
ass since it means having to reformat, reinstall OS and losing all
your info. I made a W2K Boot Ini. Disk as described in the above
link; works like a charm, and I've used it for my other computer
running W2K, although I must say both are similarly configured;
unfortunately, I boot from a scsi disk- otherwise I would send you
info on my disk so you could put it on a floppy and boot your machine.

Should find the answer somewhere on this page.
